Brawlhalla is a platform fighter with local play, online matchmaking and private rooms. For a first session, pick a Legend, learn a few controllable actions, then take those actions into a match. Treat winning and unlocking the whole roster as longer-term goals.
Give training a small, repeatable purpose
Open Training Mode and get comfortable with movement and attacks before entering a crowded match. Training has its own settings menu; the developer documents the mode in its Training Room update, and current patch notes continue to add training tools.
Choose a simple exercise: land the same attack from a comfortable distance, move away, and approach again. Then repeat while changing your starting distance. The aim is to recognize what your input does and where the attack reaches, rather than memorize a long sequence immediately.
Practice dodging as a separate action. Brawlhalla’s official dodge tutorial introduces dodges and their role in escaping attacks. It is an older tutorial, so use the current game for timings instead of copying historical cooldown values. Give yourself one thing to observe in the next match, such as when you dodge unnecessarily.
Pick a Legend through their weapons
The official Legend directory lets you filter the roster by weapon. Use that as a way to narrow your choices: if you enjoy a weapon you have tried, inspect other Legends who use it. Appearance can be your starting point, but your match actions should help decide whom to keep playing.
Spend several matches with one choice before switching. After each game, name one situation that felt confusing: approaching an opponent, returning toward the stage, or attacking from the wrong distance. Recreate that situation in practice. This gives you a specific reason to change characters or technique, instead of assuming every loss means you chose the wrong Legend.
Learn the cost of a missed attack
Attacks have different timing, reach and recovery. Brawlhalla’s October 2026 patch notes explicitly discuss recovery after misses and opportunities for opponents to punish attacks. Those mechanics make spacing a useful beginner focus.
Try this exercise with a friend: take turns approaching, throwing out one attack, and backing away. Observe when the other player can respond after a miss. Then play a normal round while watching for the same situation. This is a suggested drill, not a claim that one move or weapon dominates the current game.
Check whether a guide discusses Experimental features before applying it elsewhere. The same patch notes distinguish tests in the Experimental queue from ordinary changes; a demonstration may use rules that are still being evaluated.
Choose the right way to play together
The Steam page lists casual modes, ranked matches and private rooms, with both online and local play. The developer also confirms cross-play across the supported PC, console and mobile platforms on the official site.
For learning with a friend, create a private room and agree on the purpose before starting: relaxed matches, practice turns or a particular mode. Local play is another option when you share a machine. When joining matchmaking, read the selected mode rather than assuming every queue uses the same teams or objectives. Ranked can wait until you want results attached to a competitive ladder.
Understand Legend access before spending
Free rotation gives access to a changing selection of Legends; being available in a rotation does not mean you permanently own that character. The developer’s rotation announcement illustrates this distinction. Check the current selection in the game instead of using that historical roster.
Legends can be unlocked with Gold in Mallhalla. Prices were adjusted in October 2026, so use the current shop price when planning an unlock. Save toward a character you want to keep playing.
The paid All Legends Pack unlocks current and future Legends, but explicitly excludes Crossovers. The free base game is enough to begin practicing and playing; that pack expands immediate roster access rather than teaching the controls for you.
